Multihead weighers are mainly used in packaging automation production lines. Various conveyors, charging machines, stackers and other equipment are installed on the production line. The mainstream equipment controlled by the entire production line is a programmable logic controller (PLC). The multihead weigher is integrated in such a production line. In addition to completing its own work tasks, it also accepts PLC control like other equipment on the production line.
So the communication with PLC (including data acquisition system) is the main communication task of multihead weigher. The manufacturer of the multihead weigher has designed the interface to the PLC in a common format, allowing seamless connection to the PLC system. Once the multihead weigher is integrated into the PLC, the multihead weigher can be monitored and data collected via the PLC.
The multihead weigher is increasingly becoming an input device and feedback mechanism for comprehensive statistical process control (SPC). It can transmit weight data or have functions such as statistics, production management, and product conversion. At present, the communication interfaces between multihead weigher and PLC include Modbus TCP, MODBUS RTU, Profi-bus DP, Ethernet IP, Device Net, Control Net, OPC, etc., which have become the standard of manufacturing and packaging industry. Through these interfaces to the PLC, including through remote PLC stations, the multihead weigher can be connected to the production process management system.
Usually, when selecting equipment, the multihead weigher manufacturer should ask the PLC interface types and interface rules that the multihead weigher can choose, and introduce the scheme to realize the basic integration in detail. Integration with the PLC should range from basic weighing data to command upload and download of complex data, while at the same time it should be able to provide a high level of automation. The multihead weigher should be able to communicate its production results data such as: total throughput, number of products that are in compliance, number of non-compliant products, pack partition weights, averages, and standard deviations of production activities.
