Whether it is spices, protein or milk powder, mixed beverages or non-food powdered enzymes or chemical additives, powder packaging is still the market for bulk packaging equipment. With the increasing popularity of convenience products, we expect the powder packaging market to grow further in the segments of prepackaged spice mixes, meals, instant coffee and beverage mixes, and portable protein powders. When it comes to powder packaging, packaging equipment manufacturers need to know three things in order to provide the best packaging solution for your specific application.
A powder product is considered free-flowing when its particles are not cohesive. Table salt in this regard is "free-flowing" when dispensed. Adding extra pressure usually doesn't densify these types of powders, and they don't usually hold their shape when handled.
Powder products are considered non-free-flowing when the particles are sticky. Examples of this are brown sugar or milk powder, which tend to hold their shape when manipulated and can be compacted under pressure. Determining whether a product is free-flowing or non-free-flowing is critical to the success of a powder packaging project.
In particular, it affects the type of fillers a product needs to properly dispense powder products into its packaging. Free-flowing products fall easily under the force of gravity, while non-free-flowing products require proper compaction and "assist" handling during packaging due to their cohesive nature, and therefore require a completely different filling system to get right to transport products. Typically, free-flowing powder packaging items can utilize volumetric or free-flowing auger product fillers, while non-free-flowing powder packaging requires auger fillers specifically designed to properly dispense viscous products.
Consider a non-free-flowing powder product, such as flour. Dust clouds inevitably form when flour is dispensed. Anyone who has used these types of products knows how far these particles can travel and how they can attach to almost any surface.
Now consider this in powder packaging machinery; airborne particles can cause serious mechanical problems. Therefore, some powder packaging machinery options are recommended when powder products are dusty: A dust collector or dust cover will help remove airborne particles from the source.
